Where each grit sits
- 60
- Coarse shaping. Removes material fast. Leaves deep scratches you will need 280 and up to take out.
- 140
- Coarse shaping. Still shaping. Step up to 280 before you start judging the surface.
- 280
- Shaping to smoothing. Where most cabbing starts after the saw. Follow with 600, 1,200 and 3,000.
- 600
- Smoothing. Takes out 280 scratches. Not a polishing grit on its own.
- 1,200
- Pre-polish. Surface starts to come up. Two more steps to a finished polish.
- 3,000
- Pre-polish to polish. Finishing grit for most material. Some stones need 8,000 or a cerium lap after.
- 8,000
- Polish. For material that will take a higher polish than 3,000 gives.
- 14,000
- Final polish. Final step before oxide polish. Overkill on softer stone.

Usage notes
Soft wheels and belts need breaking in before they cut properly. Run agate or similar material against the wheel for two to four minutes to clear the excess resin off the surface. Finer grits take longer than coarse ones.
Run with water at all times. Running a soft wheel dry ruins the bond.
