SuperNova soft diamond wheel

Wheels for CabKing 6" and 8"

CabKing machines take 1" bore wheels only, six to a machine: two electroplated hard wheels at 80 and 220 grit for shaping, and four resin wheels at 280, 600, 1,200 and 3,000 for smoothing. The CabKing 6 uses 6" x 1 1/2" wheels. The CabKing 8 uses 8" wheels. Our SuperNova soft wheels are 1" bore and mount with no bushing, and worn CabKing resin wheels can be sent to us for resurfacing. The electroplated wheels cannot be resurfaced.

The 1" bore rule

CabKing's manuals are direct about it: the machine only uses wheels with a 1" arbor hole. The end pieces on each motor shaft unscrew with the wrench supplied, and the wheels and spacers slide onto the shafts.

That rules out any wheel made with a smaller bore. It does not rule out other makes. CabKing's own FAQ says wheels from other brands fit as long as they have a 1" arbor hole. Our SuperNova wheels are 1" bore. The bushings in the box are for other machines; keep them if you ever change. For how bore and bushings work, see Arbor and bore sizes.

CabKing takes the 1" bore directly, no bushing.

Replacing each position

Positions 1 and 2, hard wheels. These are electroplated on the CabKing. None can be resurfaced.

Our sintered wheel 6" x 1 1/2", 1" bore, 30 to 600 grit 8" x 1 1/2", 1" bore, 30 to 600 grit

Both our hard wheels are 1" bore, which is what the CabKing takes. To match the stock set, order the nickel bond wheel in 80 and 220. Our nickel bond wheels are electroplated, the same construction CabKing uses in these positions. See bond types.

On mixing brands. We have no objection to running SuperNova next to CabKing's resin wheels, and you can replace one wheel at a time. CabKing's own FAQ and manuals advise against mixing brands of resin wheels within a set. If you would rather follow CabKing's advice, replace the four resin wheels as a set.

The end positions

The CabKing uses two kinds of end mount: a 1/4"-20 threaded mount on the right side of both machines (the 6 carries the 360 lap there, the 8 carries a 6" canvas pad), and a 1/2" hole held by a slotted bolt on the left side (the 8 carries its 8" 360 lap there, the 6 takes an optional lap). Our SuperNova disc has a 1/4"-20 screw back, 5.5" across, in 280 to 50,000 grit. That is the same thread as the CabKing's right-side mount.

Resurfacing worn CabKing wheels

When one of the four resin wheels wears smooth, send it to us instead of replacing it. Ship the wheel only, without bushings. It comes back in about a week.

A worn soft diamond wheel before resurfacing
A worn soft wheel. This is what we resurface.

Change the grit while it is here. A worn 3,000 can come back as a 14,000 or 50,000, at no extra charge. See changing grit when you resurface.

What we do not take: the electroplated 80 and 220 wheels, or any other hard wheel, and any soft wheel worn through to the core. If you are not sure, call 714-771-7007 before you ship. See when a wheel is scrap.

Going past 3,000

The stock CabKing set stops at 3,000 on the wheels. SuperNova also comes in 8,000, 14,000, 50,000, 100,000 and 200,000, plus cerium, chrome and tin. On a six-wheel machine, adding one means giving up a position or keeping a second set to swap in.

Mounting notes

Remove the end pieces with the wrench CabKing supplies. The 6V3 manual says to turn them clockwise to remove and counter-clockwise to tighten. Slide the wheels and spacers on in the order you want to use them. Tighten the end piece against the stack. If it bottoms out before the stack is tight, add spacer rather than torque.

Questions we get

Will your 6" wheels fit my CabKing 6?
Yes. SuperNova 6" x 1 1/2" wheels have a 1" bore, which is what CabKing requires. No bushing.

Will your 8" wheels fit my CabKing 8?
The bore matches: 1". SuperNova 8" wheels are 2" wide. CabKing does not publish the width of its 8" wheels, so check your stack length before ordering a full set.

Can I resurface the 80 and 220 wheels?
No. They are electroplated hard wheels. Resurfacing is for soft resin wheels only.

Can you resurface CabKing's own resin wheels?
Yes. We resurface soft resin wheels from any maker.

Does CabKing say I can use other brands?
Its FAQ says other brands fit if they have a 1" arbor hole, and advises against mixing brands of resin wheels within a set. We are fine with mixing; it is your call.
